Program Notes

Porku Indapine, composed for Zeitgeist in their residency at the University of Minnesota in spring 2007, is loosely based on the narrative of an agitated and grumpy porcupine.  The form of the composition uses additive synthesis followed by subtractive synthesis (A AB ABC ABCD BCD CD D A) to create a unique sequence of events.  Each section (A, B, C, D) is roughly the same length, develops though variations of texture in each iteration, but is unique in its tonal language (2 different scales juxtaposed on one another).
